Trailer Brake Controllers

I lead firmware for a family of unreleased trailer brake controllers at Aston Dynamics, covering the real-time control firmware, the wireless stack, the mobile app’s native BLE layer, and production test tooling.

Real-time architecture. The firmware uses a mixed scheduling model. The control loop is a hardware-paced preemptive task, I/O runs as cooperative async tasks, and blocking operations get dedicated tasks. Bench builds are instrumented with RTOS runtime stats, and production builds keep lightweight health logging.

Shared Rust code. The core logic is platform-independent and unit-tests on a laptop. A protocol library shared between the firmware and the mobile app uses UniFFI and code generation, so both ends stay type-safe and version-compatible.

Firmware updates over BLE. I designed application-level flow control for over-the-air updates, which cut a full update from about 3 minutes to about 30 seconds.

Certification. I led RF/EMC certification planning for the US, Canada and AU/NZ, moved the design to pre-certified radio modules, and am the company’s contact with the test lab.

Production testing. I’m designing a parallel factory test and provisioning system that flashes, tests and configures boards over BLE.
